I
am a full-time travel writer and photographer, contributing mainly to
magazines in the UK,
although I do occasionally contribute to ‘The Weekend Australian’. I
also do regional broadcasts on BBC Radio Lancashire.
In the belief that if I visit every country in the world, I actually
won't learn much about anything, except travelling, I rather tend to
specialise in the UK, France, Madeira, Ireland, Denmark and Australia.
The UK I've known since I was, well, very small, and France since 1973
when I first went camping in Chamonix. Australia I've been visiting
quite regularly since 1998, long enough, anyway, to amass around 6,000
pictures.
I have a wide range of interests, but I started writing about the
countryside and landscapes of the UK, and have a raft of walking
guidebooks in my portfolio. Since foot and mouth kiboshed that pursuit
in 2001, I've been focusing more on travel, mostly in France – and, of
course, that means food and drink…and drink and food…and…
Currently I’m working with AA Leisure Publishing on a new Leisure Guide,
and just starting work on a Family Guide to Ireland…and hopefully
imminently completing a new instructional guidebook on Map Reading and
Navigation.
. . . . .
I'm
quite happy to do stuff for the over-50s,
and have been crewing a tall ship round the Canary Islands,
cross-country skiing (well, cross-country falling over) in Norway,
trekking in Halkidiki and walking the levadas in Madeira. I even managed
to do the 3-day rail trip from Vancouver to Toronto on 'The Canadian',
and travelled ‘The Ghan’ from Darwin to Adelaide.
I have also written or contributed to over 50 books including The Magic
of the Scottish Islands, The Dales of Lakeland, AA Essential England,
Colors of Australia and guidebooks to many of the UK's long-distance
trails.
. . . . .
I
am sort of working on a travel narrative book about Australia; have
written the first two episodes of a TV sitcom (news awaited), and have
the outlines of a novel set in France whirling round in my head. In 2006
I gained an MA with Distinction from the University of Lancaster, and I
am currently doing postgraduate research leading to a PhD in Historical
Geography.

TO CONTACT ME
I live in Lancashire with my wife, Viv, and our dog, Teal. Viv
often travels with me; Teal would love to, but only if there's
plenty of places for walks and swims, and stacks of food.
The best way to contact me is by email. I'm rigged up to pick up
emails anywhere I go. Use
mail@terrymarsh.com
or
countrymatters@googlemail.com.
