I am a full-time writer and photographer, specialising in travel and the outdoors, and contributing mainly to magazines in the UK and doing guidebook revisions. I am the Festival Director of the Madeira Islands Walking Festival.

In the belief that if I visit every country in the world, I actually won't learn much about anything, except travelling, I rather tend to specialise in the UK, Ireland, France, Madeira, the Azores and Australia. The UK I've known since I was, well, very small, and France since 1973 when I first went camping in Chamonix. Australia I've been visiting quite regularly since 1998, long enough, anyway, to amass around 6,000 pictures and a permanent longing to go back, frequently.

I have a wide range of interests, but I started writing about the countryside and landscapes of the UK, and have a raft of walking guidebooks in my portfolio. Since foot and mouth kiboshed that pursuit in 2001, I've been focusing more on travel, mostly in France – and, of course, that means food and drink…and drink and food…and…

Currently I’m working on revisions of Michelin Green Guides, and a new walking guidebook to Snowdonia - Great Mountain Days in Snowdonia. I am also somewhat involved in running Writers and Photographers unLimited (www.wpu.org.uk) and Guidebookwriters.com (www.guidebookwriters.com).

. . . . .

I'm quite happy to do stuff for the over-50s, the over-60s, and, now, the over 65s, and have been crewing a tall ship round the Canary Islands, cross-country skiing (well, cross-country falling over) in Norway, trekking in Halkidiki and walking the levadas in Madeira. I even managed to do the 3-day rail trip from Vancouver to Toronto on 'The Canadian', and travelled ‘The Ghan’ from Darwin to Adelaide.

I have also written or contributed to over 70 books including Ireland with your Family, AA British Leisure Guide, The Magic of the Scottish Islands, The Dales of Lakeland, AA Essential England, Colours of Australia and guidebooks to many of the UK's long-distance trails.

. . . . .

I am sort of working on a travel narrative book about Australia. In 2006 I gained an MA with Distinction in Lake District Studies from the University of Lancaster, and I am currently doing postgraduate research leading to a PhD in Historical Geography.

TO CONTACT ME

I live in Lancashire with my wife, Viv, and our dog, Teal. Viv often travels with me; Teal would love to, but only if there's plenty of places for walks and swims, and stacks of food.
The best way to contact me is by email. I'm rigged up to pick up emails anywhere I go. Use
tm@wpu.org.uk.
