I am a full-time travel writer, contributing to newspapers, websites and magazines in the UK. My specialist areas are Britain and also Italy, which I visit several times a year if possible. I am also the Feature Writer for the Italian Cuisine section of Suite101.com.

I also write about walking and wildlife for the travel pages – sometimes combining both, such as going on a walking safari in Kenya (where I discovered, with a rush of adrenalin, just how brilliantly lions are camouflaged).

I travel by train wherever I can - I think railway journeys are one of the best ways of both seeing a place and meeting local people.

. . . . .

I have also written or contributed to over 30 guidebooks including guides to Wales and to Tuscany (both published by Footprint).

I also write scripts for audio tours. Some are used for exhibitions and in stately homes and gardens, others are available on-line.

New England - walking for everyone
It is a part of America better known for its glorious autumn foliage than its great walking. Why that should be I can't imagine, unless the Americans just preferred to keep it all to themselves. Anyway, the secret's out now. There is walking to suit everyone: high mountain climbs and gentle woodland walks; historical hikes and literary trails. And the scenery is not only glorious - there's an awful lot of it.

Hidden Rhodes
There is a Greek island where a forgotten city snoozes in the sun; where rare butterflies and orchids thrive; where local people still fear the ‘evil eye’. It’s an island where you can soak up the silence of remote whitewashed churches; walk rocky footpaths with only wild goats for company; marvel at Byzantine, Turkish and Minoan antiquities, and sip syrupy coffee in sleepy village cafes. And the name of this island? It’s Rhodes – that’s right, home of the notorious resort of Faliraki, synonymous with legless lager louts and tacky tourism. Yet as I discovered, Faliraki’s clubs and bars take up just a fraction of this craggy, green treasure in the Dodecanese.  ...
