Looking for an Indian Ocean specialist? Then look no further. I am a British travel writer based in Mauritius where I live with my husband and partner, Eric Roberts and three mutts. I have 20 years experience writing mainly for UK and overseas travel publications and have written or contributed to over 30 guide books.

Add newsletters, consultancies, updates, on-line guides (and photography by ‘him indoors’ who stays mainly outdoors) we work as a team coming up with well-researched copy and visuals which are fresh, informative, bang-up-to-date and more to the point - on time.

I was ‘made’ in Greece, born in Mauritius and grew up in London and it’s thanks to this Greco-Mauritian heritage that I speak French, Greek, Creole and yes - English too. I now specialize in Mauritius and the neighbouring islands of Reunion and Rodrigues, Seychelles and Sri Lanka, destinations that I have regularly visited over the years.

I can provide an insider’s view of what it’s really like along with what’s hot and what’s not, if that’s what you’re looking for, but if you’re after straight destination pieces or anything unusual I can do that too.

My great passion is animal welfare. I have written about dog sledding in Canada, walking with rescued dogs in the mountains of northern Cyprus, walking in the wild with lions, the stray dog population in Mauritius and more recently toddling with over 100 giant Aldabra tortoises on the remote island of Rodrigues and the outer reaches of Seychelles.

I am the main contributor and updater of the Insight Guide to Mauritius, Reunion and Seychelles and sole author of the Berlitz Guide to Mauritius, Thomas Cook Travellers Seychelles, Thomas Cook Hotspots Seychelles and Thomas Cook Hotspots Mauritius.

My articles have appeared in The Sunday Times, The Times, The Sunday Telegraph and The Independent. Others include the travel sections of A Place in the Sun, Living France. PICTURES

Eric takes the pictures for many of the guides and travel articles although in emergencies I have been known to press the shutter myself. We have a digital photo library specializing in all aspects of the Indian Ocean region, which we use to illustrate our own guides and supply to others, including the front cover of the Bradt Guide to Mauritius.

Port of Call – Port Louis, Mauritius
En route to the Mauritian capital back in 1978, my taxi driver, a garrulous fellow with a knack for metaphor, described Port Louis as “a wasted old woman musing on lost youth.” And the tropes kept coming as we wound along the island’s west coast. “They ought to dip her in the sea, give her a lifting, and start all over again!” A lifting—that’s the local Creole for “face-lift,” and Port Louis in those days, 10 years after Mauritius declared its independence from Britain, was indeed in dire need of a makeover. What a difference three decades makes.

Spectacular Reunion
Three million years ago Reunion was spawned from the seabed by seismic activity to form the tip of an underwater massif known as the Mascarene Ridge. For the first French settlers arriving in 1642 they would have seen the island hovering on the horizon like a huge bun loaf shrouded in mist. Today’s travellers will discover an incredible series of mountains encircled by a narrow coastal strip with countless ravines and peaks irregularly fashioned into three cirques, or craters, each dotted with villages, forests, rivers and waterfalls providing countless awesome vistas.

Mauritius too hectic? Escape here
The dawn flight from Mauritius to the island of Rodrigues is every cabin crew’s nightmare. Sanjay, our steward, sulked as he dished out breakfast to 48 zombies who, like him, had risen in the middle of the night to check in. It didn’t help when I pointed out to him that a scorpion was somersaulting across my meal tray. The French holidaymakers were predictably agitated, returning Rodriguans somewhat sanguine and Mauritians frankly frightened. Sanjay forced his best corporate smile in an effort to pacify the rising hysteria and muttered: “I don’t know why they’re all going to Rodrigues. There’s nothing to do there.”
