Having worked for many years in the publishing industry selling other travel writers’ books, Duncan J. D. Smith decided in 2003 to start writing and illustrating his own. As a full-time freelance travel writer, photographer, and self-styled ‘Urban Explorer’, he has embarked on a lifetime’s adventure to uncover and record the hidden corners, little-known places and unusual objects of Europe’s great capital cities.

His findings are being published in a groundbreaking series of guidebooks – the “Only in…” guides – designed specifically for the purpose. The first two titles, Only in Vienna and Only in Budapest, were published simultaneously in English and German in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Only in Prague and Only in Berlin will be published in Spring 2008, and a further volume on Paris is in preparation. For further details visit www.onlyinguides.com.

As a result of his extensive travels, not only through the cities of Europe but also Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, the Greek Islands, and Turkey, Duncan regularly generates original illustrated material for publication both in magazines and on the Internet. He has an encyclopedic knowledge of the places about which he has written, as well as an extensive library of pictures available for commercial use. Duncan has also undertaken radio and television work and given many lectures in the course of promoting his creative efforts.

Duncan's online celebration of Penguin Books' early 'Travel & Adventure' series can be found at www.penguincerisetravel.com.

Born in Sheffield, England in 1960 Duncan ran his own private museum from the age of ten before going on to read Ancient History and Archaeology at Birmingham University. Together with his father Trevor, Duncan co-wrote and illustrated four highly successful books on the hidden corners of Sheffield and Yorkshire, and was the author of a best-selling topographical book on the county. Still a passionate collector he now tries to restrict his habit to travel books, whilst also enjoying gardening, natural history, and music.

Prague - an insider's guide:
Still Bohemian After All These Years
Straddling the banks of the Baltic-bound Vltava, Prague is compact, storied, and achingly beautiful. Despite dropping its guard to the perils of mass market tourism in the wake of 1989’s Velvet Revolution, it is still surprisingly easy to escape the year-round crowds and discover the city off the beaten track.

Vienna’s Flak Towers:
Historical Memory and Adaptive Re-use
There stands in Vienna a stark, immutable reminder of the years of the Third Reich: six huge surviving reinforced-concrete anti-aircraft towers whose blank facades and imposing mass contrast sharply with the city’s finely-restored historical architecture.
