Having worked for many years in the publishing industry selling other travel writers’ books, Duncan J. D. Smith decided in 2003 to start writing and illustrating his own. As a full-time freelance travel writer, photographer, and self-styled ‘Urban Explorer’, he has embarked on a lifetime’s adventure to uncover and record the  unique locations, hidden corners and unusual objects of Europe’s great cities.

His findings are being published in a groundbreaking series of guidebooks – the “Only in…” guides – designed specifically for the purpose. To date the series covers Vienna, Budapest, Prague, Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne, Zurich, Paris, and, most recently, London. For further details visit www.onlyinguides.com. In 2010 he also released Only In Vienna as an audiotour on CD.

As a result of his extensive travels, not only through the cities of Europe but also Morocco, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Ethiopia, the Greek Islands, Croatia, Turkey, Kenya and Tanzania, Duncan regularly generates original illustrated material for publication both in magazines and on the Internet. Duncan has an encyclopedic knowledge of the places about which he has written, as well as an extensive library of pictures available for commercial use. He has also undertaken radio and television work and given many lectures in the course of promoting his creative efforts.

Duncan's online celebration of Penguin Books' early 'Travel & Adventure' series can be found at www.penguincerisetravel.com.

Born in 1960 in Sheffield, England, Duncan ran his own private museum from the age of ten before going on to read Ancient History and Archaeology at Birmingham University. Together with his father Trevor, Duncan co-wrote and illustrated four highly successful books on the hidden corners of Sheffield and Yorkshire, and was the author of a best-selling topographical book on the county. Still a passionate collector he now tries to restrict his habit to travel books, whilst also enjoying gardening, natural history, and music.

Duncan is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

Paris Prayers - a litany of liturgies
Paris is a city too often straitjacketed by its galleries, museums, restaurants, and cabarets. Balzac of course knew better than to judge the city by those showcase attractions. For him Paris was more than merely la ville lumière. Instead it was an ocean criss-crossed by myriad currents. And still that’s true today. One of the least known of those currents charts a course around the city’s places of worship, along the way capturing the spirit of Paris devotions.

Prague - an insider's guide:
Still Bohemian After All These Years
Straddling the banks of the Baltic-bound Vltava, Prague is compact, storied, and achingly beautiful. Despite dropping its guard to the perils of mass market tourism in the wake of 1989’s Velvet Revolution, it is still surprisingly easy to escape the year-round crowds and discover the city off the beaten track.

Vienna’s Flak Towers:
Historical Memory and Adaptive Re-use
There stands in Vienna a stark, immutable reminder of the years of the Third Reich: six huge surviving reinforced-concrete anti-aircraft towers whose blank facades and imposing mass contrast sharply with the city’s finely-restored historical architecture.
