I am based in Paphos, Cyprus, which is currently gearing up to be the European Capital of Culture for 2017 with Aarhus in Denmark. It’s an exciting time to be here with new galleries, theatres and cultural projects giving the city a new vibrancy. Cyprus is at the crossroads of three continents – Europe, Asia and Africa – which gives me a rare insight into several cultures every day.

I write extensively on Cyprus for guidebook publishers, newspapers and magazines, and for online/downloadable guides. You’ll see my name in Dorling Kindersley’s DK Eyewitness Guide Cyprus and DK Top 10 Cyprus, AA Publishing’s Spiral Cyprus and Thomas Cook’s Traveller Cyprus guidebooks. I also edit a Cyprus-based publication, consult on Anglo-Cypriot projects and research film and photoshoot locations around the island.

My home in Paphos is in a traditional, stone-built style and surrounded by a hundred of my own olive trees. With help from my Cypriot friends, I harvest the olives every year and have them pressed to produce the most glorious oil. It’s a lovely lifestyle. You’ll understand when I say it’s often difficult to tear myself away from Cyprus, but I do because to not travel and experience other cultures would be a travesty.

I spend lots of time in Athens where I have a base overlooking the harbour, and travel throughout Greece and its gorgeous islands in pursuit of stories. Santorini and Rhodes are favourites and easy to reach from both Athens and Paphos. I have written guidebooks covering all of the Greek Islands. I can also often be found in the wonderful country of Jordan to research updates for my best-selling Bradt Travel Guide, and in Egypt and Morocco, Dubai and a whole host of other Mediterranean hotspots for guidebooks.

Further afield, I like nothing better than to cruise around the Caribbean islands, wander around the streets of Paris where I once lived or head over to Thailand. These, together with worldwide cities like Hong Kong, Cape Town and New York, are all destinations I have researched for guide projects.

Of course, being an East Anglian through and through, I also love to return to my roots in England. I might explore Colchester Castle, sail around the East Coast or head inland to Cambridge for some serious shopping. Bath, where I once studied, is a firm favourite when in the UK too.

. . . . .

I have had the pleasure of working with some great names during the course of my career. I trained with the BBC in London and went on to become a UK newspaper business editor, and the editor of a number of magazines, before turning to freelance travel writing.

My clients include Dorling Kindersley, Michelin, Bradt Travel Guides, AA Publishing, National Geographic, Frommer’s and New Holland, Time Out, ABTA, Wanderlust and a host of airlines, tourist boards and magazine publishers.

Moorish Morocco
In Morocco’s imperial cities you will find glorious architectural treasures quite literally fit for a king. With an enthralling mix of traditions set deep in Africa and a willingness to embrace the modern world, Morocco is one of the world’s most compelling destinations. It is an exotic, vibrant place rich in colour with villages where little has changed in centuries, cities with a hedonistic edge, mountains, coast and deserts. What it also has is four cities where centuries of extravagance have left an amazing legacy.

Stretch Summer - Cypriot food and wine at harvest time
Autumn is a glorious time in Cyprus. It is a time when I can get out into the countryside, blue-green with olive trees, and be part of the activity that heralds in harvest time. The olives in my grove, like my neighbours’, have turned purple, the almonds and carobs are ready to pick and the grapes in the vineyard are plump and ready to turn into wine.

Sites to Behold - Paphos
Sipping a cocktail and gazing out over one of the most picturesque harbours in Cyprus, you could be forgiven for thinking life doesn’t get much better than this. In view is a major Paphos (locally Pafos) landmark, a medieval castle that silhouettes against the blue sky.  We are in Kato (lower) Paphos, a district full of art galleries, tavernas and archaeological treasures, which have helped earn Paphos UNESCO World Heritage List status in its entirety.

Sense and the City
To say Marrakech is a city for the senses is almost an understatement. One minute you could be cooking and tasting some of the most exquisite food on the planet and the next being scrubbed and doused in a hammam. You can mix with the locals who will almost certainly be engaged in loud, animated conversation, and then slope off to smell the flowers in one of the city’s rich gardens. Marrakech has the lot. It is a city that will capture your heart.

Lebanon in Colour
On a visit to Lebanon you can’t help but admire the extent of local artists’ imagination. The styles and patterns are as varied as the plethora of colours and the materials used for crafts made of the country’s natural resources. Finely sculpted pottery and blown glass pieces, cutlery, colourful textiles and embroidered fashion accessories, carvings made from olive tree wood and grass baskets, plus soap produced from olive oil and sea salt used for beauty treatments are just some of handicrafts found here.
