I've
been a professional, full-time writer of travel guides and features for
over 30 years. During that time I have written hundreds
of travel articles for a wide variety of UK publications, including most
British national newspapers, and am the
author of around 30 popular travel books and
guides.
I travel widely and
frequently, not
always in connection with work, and
have lived in several countries, including Greece (Corfu), Tunisia, India and
America (California).
I have had a lifelong involvement with France, where I lived and worked
(as a truck driver) for
several years in the Languedoc region. I have also been a frequent visitor to
Israel, where my parents used to live.
. . . . .
Always
freelance, I have extensive experience of UK national newspapers, consumer
magazines, websites, guidebook writing and travel publishing.
I was overall editor of the French
Railways' travel quarterly, Rail
Europe Magazine, from 1990 to 1999.
I also occasionally write under the
name Jane Pitt.
In addition to guidebooks
and travel features, I do some other writing. In 2005 I completed and
self-published LOVE, a memoir of the hippie era.
My latest novel,
The J-Word, published by
Snowbooks
in the UK in 2009 (released in the US in 2010), is about an antisemitic attack on an 80-year-old man who long ago ceased to think of
himself as Jewish. With the aid of his 10-year-old grandson he sets out
to get justice - in his own unorthodox way. I am currently writing
another novel.

Villages Etapes
It was only for one night, but I fell in love with Massiac.
What silence in the narrow streets of ancient, dark stone houses! What a
wonderful setting, green Auvergne hills rising behind the
rooftops. And how satisfyingly traditional the hotel’s restaurant,
all white-clothed tables and chandeliers and a perfectly correct
four-course menu for 20 euro (£14). This indeed is what
francophiles seek, and sometimes wonder if it still exists.
Above all, what a contrast between Massiac and the autoroute, A75, just
four kilometers away, which had led me straight here with the
simple exit sign, “Village Etape”.

Crete
Awake early, I step onto the balcony. The air is exquisite. An
immense vista reaches over the hills, and there’s a cacophony of
crowing and quacking and barking as a new morning moves across the
sky, sweeping away the last of the night.
When the sun comes
blindingly into view, straight away it’s warm enough to sunbathe.
Every day it’s hot, hot, hot as Crete bakes under cloudless blue
skies all summer. ...

San Francisco - Going for Gold
After seeing Fisherman’s Wharf, it’s clear that sea lions
would not make very good pets. They loll all around the huge Pier
39 like gigantic animated jelly babies, wriggling and tussling
constantly (except for the ones who seem to have slipped into a
coma). The young males rough each other up and sound like a bunch
of louts, endlessly roaring Uh? Uh? Uh? Uh?
Not many cities have a colony of wild sea lions living in the centre, but
then, not many cities are like San Francisco.
