I
am a full-time award-winning travel writer and occasional broadcaster,
and am the author of many pieces for magazines, newspapers, websites and
guidebooks.

My
awards include a BGTW award for broadcasting (1999); Best Italian
feature (trade) for ENIT (Italian Tourist Board – 2007); Best Guidebook
(runner-up) Travel Press Awards (2009); Best Print Feature awarded by
Tenerife Tourism Corporation (2011); and Best Travel Guide Runner up for
‘Frommer’s Sicily Day by Day’, in the Italia (ENIT) Travel Writing
Awards (2011).
I have written, contributed to or updated over 30 guidebooks especially
on Italy and France for publishers including the AA, AAA, Berlitz,
Insight, Dorling Kindersley, Thomas Cook and Frommer’s.
I speak fluent French and passable Italian and Spanish.

more so than in any other country in the world, in Italy the pleasures
of the table are a culinary celebration of life itself. Although it was
finally unified politically in 1870, the country is still divided into
20 distinct regions, each of them with its own unique landscapes and
history that are reflected to this day in its culinary masterpieces.

Sardinia's Best Beaches
- Italy
Sardinia
has some of the world’s most idyllic beaches. Mile upon mile of
pearly-white sands dip into waters of dazzling shades of aquamarine and
emerald green. Elsewhere, rugged cliffs plunge into the sea and tiny
coves and picturesque harbours beg to be explored. The waters really are
swimming-pool-blue — and the sandy coves are often deserted.

Agatha Christie and the
Dragon Tree

‘I
have never smelt roses so sweet as those in Mr Smith’s garden,’ said the
famous botanical painter and traveller, Marianne North. She was speaking
of the Sitio Litre Gardens set on a volcanic hillside in Puerto de la
Cruz. Forsaking marriage — ‘a terrible experiment’ to Marianne —she
instead travelled the world to paint flowers. Not for her the gentle
watercolours of the day but oils of vibrant, mesmerising hues.
